A number of years ago, having most recently spent time as the head of a boys boarding school in Connecticut, I accepted the invitation to become head of Old Trail School in northeast Ohio.  Despite the gentle questioning of my New England friends and relations, my wife, three children and I headed “west.”  I am proud to say that this school and this place are now home.  My two youngest daughters were born here, my parents have relocated to join us, and I hope to spend many more years learning and leading at Old Trail.  Only one thing has never changed… I am still a die-hard Red Sox fan!

You may be wondering what first captured my attention and what continues to excite and challenge me.  I will try to answer that question on this “Welcome” page, for I suspect that we are not dissimilar.  Like I was, you are searching for the right school for your family, and the search must start with location.  Old Trail is in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park.  This unique status defines us.  Our neighbors are Blossom Music Center, the summer home of the Cleveland Orchestra; Hale Farm; Stan Hywet Hall; and the Park itself.  Our rich curriculum, technology, and service learning draw strength and support from such a wonderful unofficial partnership, for we all share a love of location and a commitment to sustaining it.

Important as location can be, it is the curriculum that defines a school.  Old Trail's program is fast-paced, exciting and demanding.  Our students are prepared for the most rigorous secondary schools, but focusing on the learning style of each individual student is not overlooked.  It is in the curriculum that our school motto, "Inspiring the Promise of Each Child" reaches its apex.  For some, the promise is found in academics, but for others, their times to shine are in performing or fine arts, sports, technology, the myriad electives, or student leadership.  In all cases, we rejoice in the triumphs and work together on the tough tasks.

Last but clearly not least is community.  I have the privilege of working with an incredibly dedicated, talented, passionate group of people… teachers and staff, parents, and the students themselves, coming from Summit, Cuyahoga, Stark, Medina and Portage counties.  They challenge me, encourage me, and make me laugh.  They embody Old Trail’s four Core Values:  Respect, Responsibility, Goodness and Service.  They welcomed me years ago, and they are waiting to welcome you.  I invite you to explore this website, and then give our admission office a call.  Schedule a visit, ask questions, listen, share, and above all, imagine… just as I did… imagine your family at Old Trail School.  I hope that the concept of, “Inspiring the Promise in Each Child” will excite you as it did my wife and me!
