Old Trail School is situated on 55 acres adjacent to the Cuyahoga Valley National Park.  While this unique location provides a beautiful backdrop in all seasons, our setting serves as more than a reminder of nature’s bounty.

Many teachers across the disciplines and grade levels incorporate the “blessings of place” into their lesson plans.  It is not unusual to see a group of students joyfully returning to their classroom after a morning mucking around at the edge of a local pond; a shared advisory lunch on the lawn; a creative writing session sprawled across the benches of the outdoor amphitheater; a watercolor project of an adopted tree in each season; or winning a cross-country track event.

Children are taught from the youngest age that it is a privilege to attend school in such a wonderful place.  With that privilege comes responsibility.  Preschoolers plant daffodil bulbs while middle schoolers help to maintain hiking trails.  Students are learning that environmental sustainability is not just a concept.  Good stewardship of our “home” is part of the school day.

Yea, I am one with all I see,
With wind and wave, with pine and palm;
Their very elements in me
Are fused to make me what I am.
Canadian poet Robert Service

It is not the mountains that we conquer,
but ourselves.
                       Sir Edmund Hillary
