Service learning is a major component of our philosophy and our
curriculum. Students begin in Preschool to contribute service
to Old Trail and beyond. Each year after that, students at every
grade level share their time and their talents in response to
the gift of an Old Trail education, and to enrich the lives of
others.
4. Every year, students in Grade Five through Grade
Eight participate in class trips. In the past, places visited have
included outdoor programs in our own National Park, northern
Michigan and Yosemite, and Tremont in the Smoky Mountains; urban
experiences in Chicago, Toronto, and Washington, D.C.; and international
adventures in Quebec and France. Though the venue may change
year by year, the purpose remains the same: to provide
an opportunity for students and teachers to learn about themselves
and each other in a safe, secure, nontraditional setting.
5. Old Trail School is located in the Cuyahoga Valley National
Park, and to the best of our knowledge, such a distinction
is unique to us. This natural environment is an added dimension
to every school day, not only providing a beautiful drive in
all seasons, but encouraging both curricular and service opportunities.
*6. For eighty-eight years, Old Trail School has been a sharing,
growing, nurturing partnership of students, parents, administration,
staff, alumni, and Board of Trustees. These partners are united
in their commitment to common objectives and standards of excellence
which are articulated in the Mission, Vision and Philosophy.
