The language arts curriculum is a literature based program which
builds a strong foundation of phonemic awareness, decoding, fluency
and comprehension skills. Students develop solid independent reading
skills and the habits to enjoy a life full of reading.
Instruction in writing is presented as a process. Students develop
skills to organize their writing through the practice of pre-writing,
creating first drafts, editing, and revising their writing. An
understanding of various types of writing for different purposes
is acquired.
D’Nealian handwriting is introduced in kindergarten and cursive in second
grade. Students are taught grammar and word study both in specific lessons and
throughout the language arts curriculum. Grammar books are used beginning in
first grade for instruction and as a resource for students.
Students develop both their active listening and presentation skills.
Small group and whole class experiences for students to speak appropriately
in front of others are given over the course of each year.

Acquiring knowledge from multiple sources begins in the primary
grades. Student’s
earliest form of research is simply looking up answers to questions
they have formulated. Over the years students become more sophisticated
and adopt the Big Six research method for all research projects.
