Old Trail School’s science curriculum develops scientific literacy in order to help students make informed and effective decisions in their personal, civic, national, and global life. We provide a means by which our students acquire the skills needed to think and act proficiently in our increasingly complex, technological world.

Through activities in the physical, life, and earth sciences, the program provides hands-on experiences in which children learn by actively participating in the scientific method. Grade levels frame their studies around biomes and use themes as a basis for comparison of diverse regions and organisms. Research projects are often driven by the study of biomes.

Curiosity, open-mindedness, skepticism, and ethical behavior are central to participation in scientific inquiry. Students are actively involved in developing scientific skills and concepts, while working cooperatively and independently whether conducting research or experiments. The students formulate questions, hypotheses, develop models and test these through observations and experiments. They recognize scientific knowledge is always open to refinement and that an open-minded approach is necessary when seeking solutions to problems. Students communicate their scientific findings through technology, written and oral presentations.
