What can get a fourth grader singing math songs at home in the shower?

Have you seen the “Fab Four” perform at a Head of School assembly lately? They’re decked out in green capes with a cool logo on the back that is made from a protractor, fraction bar, division sign and multiplication symbol. Thanks to Mrs. Holly Wilson’s creativity, the fourth grade class is having fun learning about math and then singing about it.

Mrs. Wilson came up with the idea for the capes earlier this year and then, thanks to the support and assistance from fourth grade parents, they had the logo made and sewed the capes (thanks to the eight sewing moms!)

Mrs. Wilson takes old songs and changes the words to be math-related. So far this year, the fourth graders have learned and performed “Fraction Do” (to the tune of the Mountain Dew commercials), the “Polygon Song” (to the tune of “Yesterday” by The Beatles) and are getting ready to sing another fraction song set to “The Battle Hymn of the Republic.” Mrs. Wilson also has a special rendition of the oldie but goodie “Sardine Song” planned for later in the school year.
