Environmental Sustainability

Old Trail School is building a prototype of what should be happening everywhere, focusing on five major areas of environmental sustainability: water, food, operations, recycling and facility. Each of these areas has been carefully evaluated by our administration and we are looking at ways to improve each of them and connect them directly to our curriculum. We are striving to reduce our carbon footprint and introduce students to their natural world through hands-on science lessons, gardening and habitat restoration.

Our campus in Cuyahoga Valley National Park allows us to focus on location-based education. We take advantage of our unique surroundings by encouraging our students, families, faculty and staff to take time to examine and explore the outdoors — using our campus as an environmental learning center.

Our faculty, staff and administration have an ongoing commitment to integrate environmental sustainability into the School’s curriculum. We have spent a great deal of time critically evaluating what the school can do to “go green” and be better stewards of the environment. We believe it is our responsibility to teach students about environmental preservation through curriculum. We seek ways to integrate environmental sustainability into all aspects of the school — our curriculum, facilities, food service and operations — and share our knowledge with others.
