Welcome to the Primary School
Welcome to Old Trail School’s Primary School! Our corner of the School houses five preschool programs for children ages two to five as well as the kindergarten, first and second grade classes. We provide an educational journey for children in a nurturing environment full of developmentally appropriate experiences. The Primary Division fosters curiosity, creativity, oral language, concept building, negotiation, problem solving skills, and overall character development as we guide the children along their learning path.
During the earliest years of primary education, children learn to function outside their family setting, often for the first time. As the children grow, we place an emphasis on the learning process as well as the product with a balance of opportunities for small group, large group and individual learning experiences. Through PLAY the children integrate all types of learning—physical, social, language development, emotional, and intellectual. They develop their self-help skills and increase their independence and resilience.
The curriculum includes a strong academic foundation supported by an array of opportunities for self-expression through music, art, Spanish, and technology. Children learn together in a variety of settings, not only in their classrooms, but also in the library, science labs, computer labs, gymnasiums and the National Park. Students benefit from many enriching opportunities in the form of service learning projects, speakers, programs, fieldtrips and classroom activities that are directly related to the curriculum.
As you walk through our halls, you see children joyfully engaged in their learning—perhaps counting in Spanish, singing math facts, painting at the easel, writing a book on the computer, creating props for readers’ theatre, or examining a sunflower. Come, experience our School as we lay a foundation for future learning!
