At Old Trail School, curiosity and creativity go hand in hand, and our first graders recently showcased both in a project that brought the animal kingdom to life. The project was designed to deepen students’ understanding of the natural world while fostering research, critical thinking and presentation skills.
Each student selected an animal that captured their interest and embarked on a journey of discovery. They learned about their chosen animal's habitat, diet, physical traits and unique behaviors. But the learning didn’t stop there! Students tapped into their artistic side to create vibrant, imaginative models of their animals. These models, made from a mix of materials, reflected the students’ interpretations and understanding of their animal's features and environment.
The culmination of this project was a special presentation for families and friends. The students proudly displayed their dioramas, sharing fascinating facts and insights with their audience. Parents and guests were impressed by the students’ enthusiasm, knowledge and ability to articulate their discoveries with confidence.
This project not only encouraged our first graders to connect with the world around them but also exemplified the hands-on, interdisciplinary learning that is central to Old Trail School’s mission. It was a wonderful reminder of how deeper learning experiences can inspire curiosity and a lifelong love of exploration.
