Experiences that foster deeper understanding are invaluable in education. The annual sixth-grade visit to Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens transcends the typical notion of a field trip. It's an immersive journey into history, architecture, and the lives intertwined with this remarkable estate.
Old Trail shares a special bond with Stan Hywet, as both institutions have woven together their philosophies, spaces, and communities over the past century. In fact, many of the descendants of the Seiberling family have attended OTS, members of the family have served on our school's board of directors, and for the past several years, our Grade 6 students have visited the historical landmark for a week-long, interdisciplinary experience centered around the house.
But this experience isn't just about visiting a landmark; it's about stepping into the past, exploring the stories embedded in the house, its grounds, and the people who once called it home. Through guided tours, interactive sessions, and hands-on activities, students gain a nuanced understanding of the estate's significance in local history and culture.
OTS faculty leverage Stan Hywet's rich archival resources to craft engaging lessons across various subjects. From history and architecture to social dynamics and environmental stewardship, these lessons extend beyond the classroom, inspiring students to embark on their own educational journeys.
Beyond structured lessons, students embark on personal projects inspired by their experiences, which allow them to delve into topics of personal interest related to the estate. They are encouraged to explore their passions while applying the knowledge gained during their visit.
The culmination of this immersive journey is a final presentation back at Stan Hywet. Here, students showcase not only what they have learned but also how they have synthesized their experiences. These presentations are a testament to their growth in understanding and appreciation of cultural heritage, blending academic rigor with personal expression.
Our annual sixth-grade program at Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens exemplifies how experiential learning can ignite curiosity, deepen understanding, and cultivate a lifelong appreciation for history and community. It's an educational journey that leaves an indelible mark on students, shaping their perspectives and enriching their academic and personal development.
