On February 27, our sixth grade students took their families and peers on a journey around the world during the "International Showcase: Building Empathy through Global Perspectives." This engaging event was the culmination of a comprehensive, long-term project that encouraged students to explore the culture, history and daily life of a country of their choice.
Throughout the project, which was the original creation of retired OTS faculty member and graduate Gindy (Chenoweth) Smith '72, students conducted in-depth research on their selected countries and compiled their findings into creative and educational presentations. Each student crafted an alphabet book highlighting key aspects of their country, wrote a narrative detailing a day in the life of a middle schooler in their chosen location, designed a visual display, created a cultural artifact and presented their work to an audience.
Many students also chose to prepare traditional foods from their country for attendees to sample. Food offers individuals an exciting and memorable window into other cultures, allowing them to engage their senses and experience traditions in a tangible way. The flavors and aromas of these dishes helped bring each presentation to life, making the showcase even more immersive and enriching.
The event featured research on 27 countries across five continents, including locations in Oceania, North America, Europe, Africa and Asia. Beyond strengthening their research and presentation skills, students walked away with a deeper appreciation for diverse cultures and an increased sense of empathy for their peers around the world.
"The showcase was truly a celebration of our students' excellence," said Middle School teacher Sarah Weber, a 2005 graduate of OTS. "Their effort and creativity blew me away, and I could not be more impressed with what they created."
By stepping into the shoes of students from different backgrounds, our sixth graders gained a meaningful understanding of the ways in which culture shapes identity, education and daily routines. The International Showcase was a celebration of their curiosity, hard work and commitment to broadening their global perspectives—an experience that will stay with them for years to come.
