A Transformative Journey Through Japan

A Transformative Journey Through Japan

A cohort of Old Trail School Middle School students and faculty recently returned from an extraordinary 10-day journey through Japan, bringing home memories—and perspectives—that will last a lifetime.

The immersive experience took students across some of the country’s most culturally rich and naturally stunning regions. In Kyoto, they participated in traditional tea ceremonies, gaining insight into centuries-old customs rooted in mindfulness and respect. Along the historic Nakasendo Trail, they hiked through mountain passes and preserved post towns, tracing the footsteps of travelers from generations past.

Throughout the journey, students fully embraced daily life in Japan. They stayed in traditional ryokans, where tatami mats and communal meals offered an authentic glimpse into Japanese hospitality. They learned to roll their own soba noodles for lunch, soaked in outdoor hot springs and navigated trails that have connected communities for hundreds of years.

The trip was more than a cultural tour—it was an extension of the experiential learning that defines an Old Trail School education. With 62 acres of campus nestled within the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, students are already accustomed to learning through exploration, curiosity and connection to the natural world. That foundation made the transition to Japan’s historic landscapes feel both exciting and familiar.

Experiences like this are central to Old Trail’s mission of developing responsible global citizens. By stepping outside their comfort zones and engaging directly with new cultures, students deepen their understanding of the world and their place within it.

As these travelers return home, they carry with them not only stories of adventure but a broader perspective shaped by meaningful, firsthand experiences.

Welcome back to our explorers—we can’t wait to see where your learning takes you next.
