Hands-On Farm Study Brings Kindergarten Learning to Life

Hands-On Farm Study Brings Kindergarten Learning to Life

Old Trail School Kindergarten students recently said goodbye to a group of very special classroom visitors—their farm study chicks.

For the past several weeks, students have carefully observed and cared for the chicks from the early stages of fertilization through hatching and beyond. The experience served as a hands-on extension of the Kindergarten farm study, bringing classroom learning to life in meaningful and memorable ways.

Throughout the project, students practiced skills they have been building all year long. They sounded out words and wrote observations in journals, asked thoughtful questions, worked collaboratively with classmates and explored research connected to animal life cycles and farming.

Rather than simply reading about how chicks hatch and grow, students witnessed the process firsthand. By caring for the chicks each day and documenting changes along the way, children deepened their understanding through direct experience.

Hands-on learning opportunities like this help concepts stick while building the critical thinking, communication and collaboration skills that will serve students far beyond Kindergarten.

As the chicks move on to their next home, students are left with lasting memories—and a deeper appreciation for the care, curiosity and responsibility that come with learning through experience.
