Planting the Seeds for a New Playscape

ECP and Primary students had the unique opportunity to meet and present their ideas for a new playground to renowned landscape architect Michelle Mathis on October 18.
Ms. Mathis, who is the lead designer of Learning Landscapes and a native of Hudson, has been engaged by Old Trail to redesign the play spaces on the ECP and Primary School playgrounds for outdoor learning with a nature-based theme.

The students have spent more than a month preparing for the visit – thinking about what outdoor activities they enjoy most and then exploring how those activities might be incorporated into a new playground. Not surprisingly, the children's creativity did not disappoint! Common threads included bird nests, zip lines, tunnels, climbing trees, doublewide slides, and much more.

Next, they put those ideas into action by sketching them on paper, creating intricate models, or both! Although it would be impossible to employ all the ideas, the children certainly provided Ms. Mathis with more than enough feedback to help shape the design process!

Old Trail School is an independent day school (toddler through grade eight) located in the heart of Cuyahoga Valley National Park.
