Middle School Student Makes 100 Masks for Old Trail

Much like many of her Old Trail classmates, Grade 8 student Alex Newman was feeling a little anxious about not having a chance to say goodbye to OTS faculty and staff during this time of distance learning.
"I wanted the chance to say thank you and goodbye in a special way to everyone who has touched my life at Old Trail," she said.

After doing some thinking, Alex decided to turn her feelings into action. She dipped into her savings account, researched mask making and purchased the necessary materials – including cloth and hair ties. Every night before bed for FOUR weeks, she worked on creating the masks, which she said helped keep her mind from focusing on the negativity of the current situation and missing her teachers and other OTS faculty and staff.

Her initial goal was to make a mask for each person who touched her life during her 10 years at Old Trail. In the end, that turned out to be EVERYONE at OTS!

In all, she made 100 cloth masks to celebrate the school's upcoming Centennial celebration. She picked a rainbow of mask colors to celebrate life at OTS. The masks will be delivered to the school next week where they will be distributed to the staff at Old Trail!

On behalf of all of us at Old Trail, thank you Alex for your leadership, drive and compassion. We can't wait to see you and the rest of the OTS Class of 2020 at the graduation ceremony in less than two weeks!

Old Trail School is an independent day school (toddler through grade eight) located in the heart of Cuyahoga Valley National Park.
