For 10 years, Mrs. Marsicano has been challenging students to question the world’s mysteries. This includes the past three years teaching both sixth and seventh grade learners at OTS.
“Kathleen is an amazing teacher,” said Middle School Social Studies teacher and colleague Carrie Brown. “She does incredible hands-on things with the kids and sincerely wants to make sure everyone is learning and understanding. I wish I had had her as a science teacher when I was growing up!”
Mrs. Marsicano says she was inspired to become a teacher because she wanted a career that would allow her to share her enjoyment of science and use her imagination to create activities to spark an interest in science in others. She has found that and so much more at Old Trail where its 62-acre campus grounds not only provide a beautiful backdrop for students to call home but also daily access to abundant resources and unparalleled academic experiences.
“I love teaching at Old Trail because I am encouraged to educate students with a method of instruction that I feel is essential for learning science – hands-on activities and labs,” she said. “I enjoy having many outdoor spaces available for exploring and studying and appreciate that my class materials include waterproof boots, outdoor gear and camping chairs. But what I love most of all are my wonderful colleagues and inspiring students.”
During her free time, Mrs. Marsicano loves to read books about history and travel. In fact, she has moved 12 times in her life, including once to Germany, and lists the Netherlands, where she has relatives and can ride a bike everywhere, as her favorite place to visit.
To round out her interests, she enjoys painting rooms (“I do this every summer.”) and has written and illustrated books about amphibians for her children (“so that I could convince them they were cool.”).
We’re fortunate to have Mrs. Marsicano, and her many and diverse talents, on our staff!
#TeacherFeatureFriday is a series that aims to help the OTS community get to know our faculty and staff better. On select Fridays throughout the school year, we will use this space to highlight some of the amazing individuals who make Old Trail such a distinctive place for children to learn and grow.
