Visual Arts

Our comprehensive program of artistic, creative and academic development provides students with the fundamental skills, knowledge and experiences essential to their development as visual artists. We believe that competency in Art is taught and is not necessarily a matter of inherent talent.  Art is not only universal, but very personal and is basic to a student’s perception and understanding of the world.  Students are encouraged to develop and enhance their technical skills, cultivate their critical judgment and expand their understanding of history and culture.

A balanced and sequential art education program fosters the students’ perception of both their real and imagined worlds. Through structured coursework that includes knowledge of artists, art principles and guided critique, students learn about cultures around the world.  The use and application of skills, processes and media encourage self-expression and creative growth and results in knowledge, aesthetic judgments, skills and abilities.

Our program provides a variety of media, techniques and processes in both 2D and 3D which are developmentally appropriate in an environment that supports and encourages critical thinking, problem-solving and risk-taking. We encourage students to realize the joy of self-expression as they learn to interpret, respond to and appreciate the visual arts within the school and in relation to history and culture.
