The Importance of Nutrition and Physical Activity in Children’s Development - Recipe Ingredients for a Healthy Life
As our scientific knowledge increases about what children need to develop into the healthiest people they can be, we find affirmation of much of what our ancestors “knew.”
For example, there is now ample evidence that physical activity has benefits beyond weight control. We know that exercise can be an antidote to depression, can help to calm a child with hyperactivity and can actually enhance learning. We have learned that what we eat can influence brain health significantly and that some foods can contribute to inflammation—implicated in many disease processes.
One important ingredient for a healthy lifestyle is physical education and movement. Whether it’s learning to swim, competing on an interscholastic sports team, enjoying outdoor recess, or participating in a fencing class, children should have plenty of physical activity as part of their school day. These routine activities encourage children to stay fit and help them stay focused.
